motion design as live performance

Hello internet, Chelsea here!

(Confession: the last time I wrote a blog entry was when I was 15 on a livejournal. That was eight years ago so apologies if this gets a bit spotty!)

I’ve been so amazed by the recent expansion in live performance art! Motion graphic artists must be SO excited by these advances. I’ve perused the internet for some highlights.

Amon Tobin ‘ISAM’ Live (Extended Trailer) from Ninja Tune on Vimeo.

I’m sure everyone in the world but me has heard of the electro-noise artist Amon Tobin. I overheard classmates chatting about going to this show and I’m so jealous that I missed out! The set design is truly fantastic — you feel like you’ve fallen in ‘the grid’ (you know, that place where it’s a requirement for women to wear glowing catsuits). I can’t imagine fabricating this in the time that they did. Kudos to those designers!

We move onto this crazy performance by Beyoncé. That woman is on fire! The performance visuals in this piece are so neat. And she does a great job integrating herself into those visuals. I would imagine it hard to recover from a wrong dance move in a situation like this.

Now we move onto costume integration. The first time I saw Deadmau5 live all I could think about was how hot he must have been with that big mouse head. True enough, he took it off half way into the show! But now he’s added what…five, six pounds of electronic gizmos? Wouldn’t be surprised if he has little fans in there.

Way to go motion artists! I can’t wait to see what else you’ve got cookin’ in your noggins.

Best wishes,
C
